Hey y’all!
So happy to be here on this forum! I’m a MI based salon owner, and the creator of Nailvana! I wanted to start a thread where nail techs/manicurists can share their experiences on how they got into the industry and what they’ve done with their license! I look forward to hearing what other techs have to say
I AM A FIRM BELIEVER that you can create something from nothing if you commit to it and I think it’s so inspirational and powerful to share our experiences with others!
I got into nails during COVID when I had ALL that free time after I was laid off from working at a CPA Firm (Literally no idea how I swung that job I am terrible at math ) and when I realized I had a knack for it I stuck with it! I started in my kitchen, moved into my bedroom, and finally saved enough to get myself a place big enough to have a real in home salon by the time I got my license. Eventually I started making enough to move into a salon suite. It’s been 5 years since I started with a really terrible $30 Polygel kit, and now nails support me and my daughter! I’m fully independent, working for myself, and loving it. This is the only work I’ve done where I don’t check the clock all day, and where my clientele becomes my family as well. I have been featured in local magazines, nominated for best Nail Tech in the Detroit area, and I’ve even gotten into creating networking events for other aspiring entrepreneurs.
Nails changed my life!
Thanks for reading and I hope to see stories from others

This is such an amazing story! Can’t wait to hear more about your journey
Being a nail artists sounds exponentially more fun vs being a CPA. Glad you found your passion @Nailvana! Congrats on your nomination for best nail tech in Detroit! Your work is dope on social. Any tips on how to take a good photo?

Oh it surely is! Leaps and bounds more fun haha!
Truly I feel having a solid color background helps with the type of photos I take… also having LOTS of lighting. I play with the camera often sliding the brightness scale up and down before taking my photos. It’s so far from a one size fits all formula with my line of work because dark colors photograph differently than light colors, skin tones absorb lighting differently… I’m still figuring it out myself!

I do! I have another networking event coming this Saturday actually, focusing on the struggles of entry level entrepreneurship! I have a panel of four folks including myself this time so I’m pretty amped up.

Hosting a panel is so awesome! We’d love to hear how this goes
This sounds so interesting! I’m a new barber so I’m not quite at the level to be hosting panels yet but I would love to hear how this goes!

Being a barber has always been an interest of mine!! How are you liking it thus far? The attention to detail required for barbering is incredible!!! Time really flies, I never would have guessed I’d be into event hosting when I first started!
