What made you decide to diversify your business beyond doing hair?
Staying creative and innovative in my business approach involves a mix of continuous learning, staying updated with industry trends, and seeking inspiration from various sources. I attend workshops, participate in industry events, and follow influential stylists and brands to see what’s new and exciting. Additionally, I make time for personal creative projects, experiment with new techniques, and regularly solicit feedback from clients to ensure my work remains fresh and aligned with their evolving needs. Collaboration with other creatives also plays a significant role, as it often leads to new ideas and perspectives.
The most common maintenance challenges my clients face with hair extensions include tangling, shedding, and ensuring they blend seamlessly with their natural hair. To overcome these issues, I advise them to:
-
Regular Brushing: Use a gentle, extension-friendly brush to prevent tangling and matting. Brush their hair from the ends upwards, holding the roots to avoid pulling on the extensions.
-
Proper Washing: Wash their hair with sulfate-free, extension-friendly shampoos and conditioners. Avoid using too much product at the roots to prevent buildup that can loosen the extensions.
-
Heat Protection: Always use a heat protectant when styling with hot tools to minimize damage to both their natural hair and the extensions.
-
Sleeping Care: Advise them to tie their hair in a loose braid or ponytail and use a silk pillowcase to reduce friction while they sleep.
-
Regular Check-ups: Schedule regular maintenance appointments to ensure the extensions are in good condition and to address any issues promptly.
By following these tips, clients can extend the life of their hair extensions and maintain their natural look and feel.
I decided to diversify my business beyond doing hair to challenge myself creatively and to leverage my expertise in new ways. Expanding into areas like selling products via Etsy, education, and podcasting allows me to reach a wider audience and make a greater impact in the industry. It also provides opportunities to create additional revenue streams and enhance my brand’s resilience. Diversifying helps me stay inspired and continuously evolve, ensuring I can offer the best to my clients and the community. I’m addition, I understand that I can’t always stand behind the chair and would like to one day conformably retire.
Thank you! I’m glad you find it inspiring. Podcasting has indeed been a fun and rewarding way to share insights and connect with a wider audience. I recommend starting with the very first episode of season one, where you get a true feeling for who I am and why the podcast exists. Afterwards fast forward to season 4 where you can’t go wiring with any of the episodes! Ive had some amazing guest such as: ShearShare Cofounders, Dr. Afiya MBilliShaka and Founder of Styleseat Melody McCloakey. I’m excited for you to check it out!
